#1 Stupid Design Decision

Manhattan Portage is one of the more popular choices in messenger bags.  They are a bit more expensive than the equivalent Timbuk2 bag and this might have something to do with their popularity. (Apple takes advantage of the same kind of premium cache pricing with their products.)  They are not TUMI-like in their pricing, so I don't want to be too critical.

However, there is one design decision in many of their bags that absolutely baffles me.  In an otherwise perfectly well-designed and well made bag, they go and do this:

Looking into the main compartment of the Manhattan Portage Willoughby messenger bag.

Do you see the problem?  No?  That's because the problem is exactly that:  you can't see the interior of the bag!  This is crazy.  If you are like most people, you often find at the end of the week that you have a lot of stuff that you simply tossed into your bag in your rush to get to the next meeting.  Imagine for a moment that you tossed in a black thumb drive, black cell phone charger, your reading glasses in a red case, and your keys to the car.  If you needed to find one of these items quickly in the inky blackness of this bag, you would be better off finding your earring backing in a shag rug!

Of course, this photo seems to exaggerate the eternal depths of this bag, but in reality, it IS hard to get light into soft-sided bags - even for a professional product photographer.  Why not simply make the simple decision to do this instead:

Mountain smith Rift Messenger with a bright and functional lining!

Notice that the interior lining is a satisfyingly bright yellow.  It would be impossible to lose anything in the bottom of this bag.  Isn't this a MUCH better design decision?  Exactly.  I agree.
